CHAPTER 15

The dryer in the mudroom off Sarah’s kitchen buzzed, pulling me out of my thoughts. I turned away from the back door where I’d been staring into the yard, and opened the dryer. Inside was the load of aprons from Sarah’s Sweets that I’d promised to wash. I’d picked them up from the bakery earlier today, run another errand, and returned to the house to wash them. Luckily, it was a mindless chore because I couldn’t stop thinking about last night.

Zack flew into my head, but only because he’d been standing beside me when I’d witnessed Miss Merriweather nearly cause another traffic accident—plus, he’d walked me home last night and waited on the front sidewalk until I waved from the living room window. I’d leaned against the glass and watched until the last second when he’d disappeared down Hummingbird Lane.

My imagination ran wild again, as it had last night, and I wondered once more what might have happened between us if he hadn’t been in uniform, hadn’t been on duty, if he hadn’t been concerned about the neighbors who might have been watching us, if he’d held my hand or kissed me—I was definitely picking up a vibe between us—or if he’d asked to come into the house.

I posted a mental STOP sign in my brain, ending those thoughts.

Better to think about Iris’s hit-and-run.

Bad enough that Miss Merriweather’s driving had put another vehicle and driver, and herself, at risk. But the thing I really couldn’t get out of my head was that dent in her front fender.

Had that dent always been there? Had I simply not noticed it, or perhaps had never seen her car from that angle?

Or was it new? New, since Iris’s hit-and-run?

I pulled the aprons from the dryer, shook them out, and folded them neatly into the big canvas carryall Sarah had given me to use.

Was it possible that Miss Merriweather had struck Iris with her car? The thought made me a little queasy, but I stuck with it.

I’d seen her run up onto a curb, weave across lanes, and pull out in front of another vehicle—and goodness knows what other near-misses she might have caused—and continue on her way, seemingly not aware of what she’d done.

Could she have hit Iris with her car and not realized it? Maybe she’d gotten confused or simply made a wrong turn and driven into the alley, then had been so focused on finding her way out that she hadn’t noticed.

That alley. Mischief involving the Dumpsters and boxes outside Sassy Fashions; Anna surveilling the area out the back window of her thrift store; Iris there to meet a mystery man; Earlene there for reasons unknown—and which I may never learn since it seemed she had no intention of returning my phone calls. Who’d have thought the alley—of all places in Hideaway Grove—would be a hot spot for trouble, one that possibly involved sweet, kind Miss Merriweather in a hit-and-run.

“Oh, Miss Merriweather, you shouldn’t be driving.”

I whispered the words aloud as
